Women in IT careers have given their predictions for the world of cloud computing, mobile, gaming and e-commerce in a new report. Contributors including the chief technology officer of Cisco, Padmasree Warrior, the president of OCAD University, Dr Sara Diamond, and Meghan Peters, a community manager at Mashable, have voiced their thoughts on what might happen in the world of cloud computing, mobile, apps, social media and e-commerce.

Women in their 50s are still at the height of their career rather than at the end of it and can even find something new to do with their profession. This is the message from Ceri Wheeldon, founder of fabafterfifty.co.uk, who stressed that perceptions need to change about people in their 50s.

An online course for women in science, engineering and technology jobs (SET) that helps them return to work after a break has been praised by one of its organisers. Run by the UKRC and Open University, the course aimed to address the issue of the large number of women who fail to return to their career and stem the gender gap in the industry. While many participants returned to their SET career, author of a report into the course, Clem Herman from the Open University, said that many "soft outcomes" also came about from the project, such as increased confidence and self esteem.

The days of women staying at home while the men go out to work could soon be over as a growing number of households are seeing women become the main breadwinner. Between 1969 and 2008, figures show that the number of women who earn more than their male partner rose from five per cent to 25 per cent and according to the Office for Economic Cooperation and Development, women will soon make up more than 70 per cent of all graduates with higher earning potential.

Women have been shown to prefer online games that have a social element to them, according to new research. Statistics from the annual State of Gaming review by Spil Games show that four of the top five games for women were social or had some kind of social element to them. Social elements to games were also found to be the most popular among girls.

In the U.S., less than 15 percent of Advanced Placement computer science qualification sitters are female students. The problem is worldwide, and the shortage affects countries that are rapidly developing innovative technology, including Israel. There is still a gender divide in terms of girls choosing to pursue careers in computer science. Even though women make up over half of the world’s population, only a third of engineering jobs across the globe are held by women. It is thought that misconceptions concerning STEM subjects (science, math, technology and engineering) are to blame. This is something Google is attempting to change, according to the Official Google blog.

According to an official Google blog post, women hold less than one third of the world’s engineering gigs, despite the female sex making up more than half of the global population. Moreover, fewer than 15 percent of United States female students take Advanced Placement computer science tests. The same rule goes for high-tech regions of the world, such as Israel.
The breach between males and females in the technology industry leaves room for controversy, and such dissension reared its head at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The annual event featured scantily clad "booth babes" hired by some companies to promote their –well– booths. The practice led many to wonder if it is an effective marketing strategy or a reflection on gender gaps in technology.

The FP7 project FI-WARE, part of the Future Internet Public Private Partnership, announces its first Open Call for new project partners. FI-WARE will deliver a new service infrastructure, building upon generic and reusable building blocks called “Generic Enablers”. FI-WARE develops open specifications and reference implementations of Generic Enablers. This open call asks for organizations that can contribute or develop the Generic Enablers related to middleware and business models. Total funding available for new partners is up to 2 Million Euro, and the call closes on 25 April 2012 at 17.00.
