This event, organised in the framework of the Africa-EU Strategic Partnership aims at strengthening and supporting the development of cooperation on ICT research and ICT for development between Africa and Europe. Over 200 European and African key stakeholders in the field (coming from Institutions, National and International Companies, SMEs, Academia, Research institutes, etc.) are expected to participate in the conference. Registrations are free of charge but due to room capacity constraints seats will be limited and registrations will be accepted on a case by case basis.

The creator of an art installation that reconstructs a love-letter producing computer from 1951 has been handed the inaugural Tony Sale Award for computer conservation. Dr David Link created LoveLetters, based on the Ferranti Mark 1 computer, to reconstruct software that creates texts to express emotion. And this was enough to win the Google-sponsored prize from the Computer Conservation Society, which aims to recognise achievements in preserving older technology.

The National Center for Women & Information Technology, along with an Indiana University-led consortium of universities and corporations, has kicked off the third annual Indiana Aspirations in Computing Award competition for Indiana high school girls in Grades 9 to 12. Twenty young women will be recognized for their computing-related achievements and interests in a competition that is part of a nationwide effort spearheaded by NCWIT to generate visibility for women's participation in the field of computing and ultimately to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology. Late last year, the United Nations declared Oct. 11 the International Day of the Girl. Celebrated for the first time this month, the occasion aims to highlight the challenges girls face around the world to gain access to education and other basic rights, and empower them to advocate on their own behalf. Computer scientists are in high demand, but only a fraction of U.S. high schools offer advanced training on the subject and that fraction is shrinking. Of the more than 42,000 public and private high schools in the United States, only 2,100 high schools offered the Advanced Placement test in computer science last year, down 25 percent over the past five years, according to a recent report by Microsoft.

A new study shows established scientists are biased against women in science. Meg Urry says that most of people have unconscious expectation that men are leaders. She says we can't be gender-blind or color-blind, even when we think we are.

An international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) will be held next month, raising money for charity in the process. Ada Lovelace Day will be taking place on October 16th at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), featuring a wide range of performances from a variety of women. Comedian Helen Arney will be starring, along with academics and writers such as Alice Bell and Dr Suzie Sheehy among many more, all with the aim of shining a light on the work women do in STEM careers. And having previously been run by volunteers, organisers hope to raise money for the first time to help support women in STEM careers and keep them doing what they do best.

Nominations are now open for the Times Top 50 Employers for Women 2013 awards, which aims to recognise UK firms that make the most of women in their workforce. Case studies can be submitted under seven categories, including the Champion Award and the Global Award. Submissions are free of charge, while there is a closing date of November 27th. Those that make the final cut will feature - along with their company profiles and case. Study in a special supplement in The Times newspaper on Thursday April 18th next year.
