The Comission for Women in Science, operating at Ministry for Education, Science Culture and Sport is organising the third conference about society conditions of science, especially from the gender view point. The main theme of the conference are the hidden forms of discriminnation of women in science. According to the mission of the Comission on the national level, it will recconect intellectual reflection and practical efforts to improve working conditions and a more visible, more equal role of women in decision-making about content and aspects of financial science. Special attention will be given to consideration how the current financial and economic crisis, and in particular the disproportionate austerity measures in the field of higher education and research activities threaten women who are in the academic and research sector in disproportionately large share of workers in precarious occupations. Bittersweet.” That’s how Kyla McMullen describes what it feels like to be the first African-American woman at the University of Michigan to graduate with a doctorate in computer science. “I don’t think there’s anything special about me,” says McMullen, with a modest laugh. She explains that while it is gratifying to be recognized as a “first,” her accomplishment points out a sad reality: not enough women and minorities are pursuing advanced degrees in computer science. Out of the more than 1,400 Americans who received Ph.D.s in computer science from 2010 to 2011, less than a quarter were female, and a mere 1.2 percent, 16 people, were African-American, according to the latest Computing Research Association Taulbee Survey. It’s a good thing staggering statistics like that did not deter McMullen.

Scholars at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School found that people who evaluated candidates singly were highly influenced by the candidates' gender. When various employees were considered for promotion at the same time, however, gender didn't affect assessments.

Speakers include Mike Short, Brian Collins, Gregg Vanderheiden, Graham Worsley, Patrick Roe, Alan Newell, Deborah Pullen, Gunela Astbrink and Guido Gybels. The conference is being organised by the Cardiac project, a project co-funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, in collaboration with the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the ICT Knowledge Transfer Network. The venue is wheelchair accessible and a hearing aid loop will be provided.

Women and girls run the risk of being left behind in scientific and technological fields if countries do not put measures in place to address discrimination and change traditional attitudes, the United Nations said today, warning that this gap constitutes an obstacle to nations’ progress. According to International Labour Organization, the gap between men and women in the scientific and technological fields is linked to pervasive gender roles and attitudes in different societies - visible in both developed and developing countries - which encourage girls to pursue â€softer’ subjects.
