The objectives of the workshop are identifying the areas of weaknesses, obstacles and challenges to economic empowerment of women in the developing countries, understanding of the use of science and technology for the economic empowerment of women, studying the present status of women empowerment and the participation of women in S&T related activities in the developing countries, prepareing the guidelines for a comprehensive framework to enhance the contribution of women in building knowledge society, identifying various mechanisms suitable for women empowerment through S&T interventions, recommending schemes and programmes including training courses on S&T suitable for economic empowerment of women in the developing countries, identifying the policy initiatives required to be taken by the developing countries for empowerment of women through S&T interventions and facilitating international cooperation and networking on women S&T issues.

10 - 11 December 2008, Berlin, Germany; Intelligent Co-operative Systems that are based on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communications hold the promise of great improvements both in the efficiency of the transport systems and in the safety of all road users. CVIS (Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems) is a major European research and development project that aims to design, develop and test the technologies needed to allow cars to communicate with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure. At this event, static and mobile demonstrations will feature the first implementations of CVIS example applications.

10 December 2008, Brussels, Belgium. The EuroAfriCa-ICT project aims to establish links between initiatives in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean addressing ICT research. Quarterly concertation meetings offer an opportunity for stakeholders to share visions, network and build synergies in ICT Research. This meeting features keynote addresses on roles and visions of ICT research cooperation between Europe, the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa, thematic sessions on ICT research for health, infrastructures, sharing perspectives on the way forward in light of the recent EU-African Union partnership implementation for Science, Information society and Space as well as an introduction on and guidelines for the next FP7 Call 4.

Promoting the alignment with European standards on media legislation is one of the main priorities of the European Commission in supporting the convergence of the Western Balkan countries and Turkey with the European Union. The European Commission therefore invited media stakeholders of the Western Balkans countries and Turkey to a seminar on this topic, which took place in Istanbul on 1 and 2 December.
