Women in IT jobs crucial to fill skills gap
Hiring more women in IT jobs is vital in order to bridge the world's technology skills gap. Figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that in the US, there will be a surge in the number of technology jobs over the next ten years, with demand for computer specialists growing by 1.4 million by 2018. Two important factors are encouraging young women from an early age to pursue IT careers and the retention of women in IT roles.

Womentor 6.0 in Sweden
The 6th round of mentoring programs will start in Gothenburg, Sweden the 12 September. Until now 50 companies and more than 300 women have participated in the national "Womentor" program which is supported by the Ministry for Economy, Transport and Communication and key ICT and telecom companies. The basic aim of the project is to raise Sweden's competitiveness through getting more girls and women into leadership position in the ICT, telecom and media sector.

Female scientists on show at British Science Festival
Seven women who have excelled in their career in the science, engineering and technology (SET) industries are to have their portraits on show at this year's British Science Festival. Held in Bradford between September 10th and 15th, the women have been recognised for their commitment, contribution and leadership to their sector and were selected by a panel of judges at the UKRC's Women of Outstanding Achievement Awards.

SCTE, WICT Launch Women s TechConnect Initiative to Foster Developmental Opportunities for Women Engineers and Technologists
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) announced a new initiative that is designed to strengthen and cultivate the involvement in the cable industry by women engineers and technologists. The initiative, dubbed "Women’s TechConnect," is intended to support the career growth of women in technical positions by teaming a core group of promising engineers each year with recipients of the Women in Technology Award, presented annually by SCTE, WICT and Communications Technology magazine.

Girls encouraged to take up science in Africa
Young girls living in Ghana are being encouraged to push past the barriers to them and pursue science careers. Ten-day Girls' Science, Mathematics and Technology Camp is being held this month in the capital Accra, which aims to inspire young girls to continue their science studies with the help of other female role models who have succeeded in the sector.

Wikipedia seeks out female contributors
Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia written by the general public, is on the search for more female contributors. The lack of diversity among the contributors means that pages on science and technology are "strong", while other issues are weaker such as biographies of famous women and pages on early childcare.
