Interesting Stats

Are women under-represented in current scientific programs and projects?

The data also shows that participation of both women and men in scientific programs in absolute values has been decreasing in the last 10 years.

In 1999, there were 8,081 men scientists participating in scientific programs and projects while only 5,944 men in 2007. Similarly, in 1999, there were 3,820 women scientists participating in the scientific programs/projects, while in 2007, their participation has decreased to 3,359 women.

Not sufficient promotion and support of science and research and lower pay than in business and professions create disincentives for researchers to participate in scientific projects and programs.

However, the proportion of women scientists participating in scientific projects and programs vs. men has increased and became stable over the last 10 years. The women share was on the rise until 2002, after which, it became more stable maintaining its level at 36% throughout the last seven years.
